Boy Scout Troop 655 was chartered in the early 1960’s and has been sponsored continuously since then by First Methodist Church. The scouting program at FUMC offers a Cub Pack for boys ages 6-10 and a Boy Scout troop for boys ages 11-16. A full slate of outdoor activities (hiking, camping, canoeing, biking), service projects, skill and rank advancement, and leadership opportunities await each scout. Troop 655 has an admirable record of advancement among its membership with fifty-six scouts awarded the rank of Eagle Scout over its fifty year history.
The troop has a sound financial foundation through its continuing support by the United Methodist Men. One-half of the proceeds of their two annual barbecue suppers go to support the scouting program at FUMC through supplementing summer camp fees, purchasing supplies and materials, and providing adequate facilities. A permanent committee of the church staffed by former scouts and community leaders oversees the program and ensures a committment to the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law through the recruitment of capable leadership.
Troop 655 meets each Monday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Dan Stowe Scout Hut adjacent to the sanctuary at 117 Third Street. The several dens of Cub Pack 653 meet at various times and at various locations. Scouting at FUMC provides recreational, educational and leadership activities to today’s youth in preparation for tomorrow’s challenges.
