The tradition of deprivation probably grows out of Lenten penance for sin and fasting, the idea of becoming one with Jesus in suffering. In more recent years, people have begun to add something to their ministry to people by helping individuals during Lent. Churches or individuals may give to people in need the money saved from their practice of self-denial. The season is more appropriately viewed as a period of renewal and reacquaintance with the tenets of our Christian faith.
