Habitat Opens Offices in Cheraw

Mike Reese, Executive Director for Habitat For Humanity for both Union County in North Carolina and Chesterfield County in South Carolina, recently announced the opening of a “ReStore” in downtown Cheraw.

The ReStore provides a physical presence for Habitat in the community and serves as a public resale outlet for new and ‘gently used’ home fixtures, furniture, accessories, appliances and building materials.  The proceeds will help the local Chesterfield County affiliate provide funding for Habitat’s community improvement work.

Founded in 1976 Habitat For Humanity is an international, non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing ministry which builds and repairs simple, decent, affordable houses for those who lack adequate shelter.  Potential homeowners are selected based upon their need for housing, their ability to repay the mortgage (very reasonable due to donated materials and labor and zero interest), and their willingness to work in partnership with the local organization (typically 200-500 hours of labor [sweat equity]).

Since its inception, Habitat has built or repaired over 500,000 houses worldwide using volunteer labor under trained supervision in its effort to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and local community action.

As pastor Paul Wood observes, “The arrival of Habitat in the Cheraw area gives us as Christians a wonderful opportunity to assist the people of our community.  Home ownership is the key to many, many other blessings in this country.  Our services are welcomed at the store as the December 17 dedication and grand opening approach.  To volunteer or get more information, contact Tamara Dwyer at 843-320-1014 or 704-296-9414 or tdwyer@unionhabitat.org”
