Scouting has been an integral part of First United Methodist Church since the mid 1960’s when Troop 655 was first formed and supported by the membership.
Jimmy Duffy signed on as assistant scoutmaster in 1969 and has for the past 32 years supported this program and its significant achievements through his time, efforts, talents and inspiring spirit.
For nearly as many years, Jimmy has been a fixture at Camp Coker, lending management and supervision to many of the summer camp’s activities and offering expertise, support, encouragement, comfort and consolation to the campers.
For the many years of service Jimmy Duffy has provided to local scouting, his troop is planning to recognize him by upgrading some of the facilities at Camp Coker as a means of honoring him. The troop is presently soliciting donations to renovate and enhance the storage facilities at the camp which Jimmy has for so long managed. The project is anticipated to cost $15,000 and two-thirds of that goal has been realized.
The troop is now reaching out to members of the church and scouting family in an effort to complete this aspect of the project so that construction might begin this spring and the facility ready for the 2012 camp season.
Donations may be made to Boy Scout Troop 655, marked “Jimmy Duffy Fund” and mailed to Jerry Turner, c/o First United Methodist Church, 117 Third Street, Cheraw SC 29520.
