The Christmas season is upon us. As a church we are beginning to celebrate the coming of the Christ Child by observing Advent. The Chrismon tree will be put into place and decorated, a manger will be displayed, wreaths will be adorned, poinsettias will provide beauty and color, and the Advent wreath, stand, and candles will be carefully positioned.
Each and every Sunday during Advent we will mark the gifts that God brings to us through the birth of Jesus Christ: love, joy, peace, and hope. We will culminate the season by gathering together on Christmas Eve at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary observing a service that includes candle lighting and communion. I can hardly wait!
One sentiment I have heard many times already is that many people in our society will celebrate Christmas without focusing on the reason for the season – “for unto us a Savior has been born” (Luke 2:11). The real meaning and message of Christmas remains the same today as always, the birth of Jesus Christ, our Emmanuel (God with us). It has been said that John Wesley’s final words echoed that truth, “Best of all, God is with us.” That truly is good news to share with the world that needs love, joy, peace, and hope.
I hope that you and your family will have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
In Christ,
