“Don’t worry, be happy”…sentiments across the centuries

Reaching No. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1988 was a hit song by Bobby McFerrin titled “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” which paraphrased the advice of the prophet Isaiah who, 2700 years before, offered the Israelites similar guidance.  Michael Musto, the music critic for The Village Voice, panned the song as “absolutely the worst song ever written” but Rev. Debra Armstrong, relying more upon the words of the prophet than the lyrics of the tune, helps us find value in Isaiah’s exhortations in avoiding worry as a largely inefficient and unproductive activity.  Click on the tab above labeled “Video Sermon Archive” and then select the “December 7th” service to view this service from the sanctuary of Cheraw’s First United Methodist Church.
