Pentecost, the fulfillment of a prophecy

Pentecost is the fulfillment of a prophesy. Before his death Jesus had promised his disciples that he would not desert them following his death but rather remain with them always through the Holy Spirit. Fifty days (Pentecost is Greek for fiftieth day) after Easter the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples assembled in Jerusalem. They became fortified and emboldened and went forth to preach the gospel; hence, this day is celebrated as the “birthday” of the Christian Church.
